I am one of those who deplore the steady deterioration of the Filipino’s English language skills

” It is unfortunate that even in UP Diliman, which is where you find the brightest of the bright, there are students who are uncomfortable speaking in English. I used to think it was because they were fiercely nationalistic, but it was nothing so dramatic. They just don’t have the English verbal skills…”

Solita Collas-Monsod from the BusinessWorld Online talks about whether English should be our medium of instruction.

  1. It’s not that Filipino’s doesn’t know how to speak in english, it is the fact that Filipino’s laugh at you when they heard a wrong grammar of what you’ve just said. When that language is not the main language you are using in everyday conversation, it is so difficult to use it specially in Phils like for example in the office, according from our french friend, she ask me why, if someone just all by himself and no other friends around, he talked to her unlike if they were in a group, it seems they were avoiding her. when i arrive and stayed here in the states, still filipino’s laugh at you when you say something specially wrong grammar. Foreighners don’t laugh at you, only Filipinos. And when they answered the phone, they speak so low so other pinoy will not over hear you.
