How bluetooth got its name
Jim Kardach tells us that bluetooth got its name from Harald Bluetooth Gormson (aka Harald Blatand) who ruled as King of Denmark around the year 958:
“At this time, Intel proposed that the Special Interest Group be called by the “codename” Bluetooth until the SIG’s marketing group would come up with a formal technology name. When asked about the name Bluetooth, I explained that Bluetooth was borrowed from the 10th century, second King of Denmark, King Harald Bluetooth; who was famous for uniting Scandinavia just as we intended to unite the PC and cellular industries with a short-range wireless link.”
The original name was supposed to be either PAN (Personal Area Networking) or Radio Wire but they were not able to do any trademark searches and were supposed to launch the new name on a short notice.
